On Being Creative Part II

Yesterday I embarked on a pretty crazy bout of Spring Cleaning.  It consisted of tearing my closet apart in order to put it back together again, which is how the Russians fought World War II, might I add.  Anyway I used to be what can only be described as an emotional hoarder.  You name it, I've saved it.  Pebbles I picked up on the sand the first time I went to the beach with Doug.  A plastic bag from the rest stop in France where our bus had to stop so I could vomit because I had sun…See More

Good(er) Reads: The Kings and Queens of Roam by Daniel Wallace

Dear readers,Dreams do come true! Sort of.There is a cool story behind my book review this week.  A few weeks ago I received an email, through Good Reads, from the publisher of one of my favorite contemporary authors. The author is Daniel Wallace (his most famous book is Big Fish, which I actually haven’t read). The publisher, a division of Simon and Schuster.  Anyway, this representative of S and S informed me that she came across a review I had written for Wallace’s novel Mr. Sebastian and…See More

Good(er) Reads: Green Shadows, White Whale by Ray Bradbury

My husband once told me that one of the things he loves about me is my taste in books, and I’m pretty sure I was beaming for days after that compliment.  I bet a lot of people wouldn’t even view that as beam-worthy praise…it’s not exactly a soliloquy espoused by Romeo in the garden.  But, it meant the world to me.  There is a certain science to my book selections.  Sometimes they are things I randomly come across in a morning spent at the library or in the back rooms of a dusty used bookstore. …See More

Good(er) Reads: The Short Stories of Anton Chekhov

Finally! I finally finally finally finished a book by a Russian author.  This is really weird, because I’ve studied them, learned about them, read about them, but never actually read one.  I didn’t know where to start.  Tolstoy? Gogol? Dostoyevsky? Pushkin?  Nabokov? (Oops…just realized I did read a Nabokov, Invitation to a Beheading…but for the sake of this cute little introduction, let’s pretend that’s…See More

Good(er) Reads: A Star Called Henry by Roddy Doyle

Something miraculous happened this weekend!Well, to begin with, I recently finished reading A Star Called Henry by Roddy Doyle.  It was good, but I wanted more.  The ending was left wide open, so many unanswered questions, so much possibility for the next chapter of the protagonist’s life.  I even tried to justify it!  “Sometimes writers just do that,” I said to my husband, with an all-knowing, but resigned sigh.  “Sometimes the conclusion is left out because that’s not the point of the whole…See More

GOODER READS: The Possessed by Elif Batuman

We're back from the holiday hiatus! It's like tv, but I hope you learn a little something here. I'm going to Holden Caulfield this post and get right down to it.I made book bank this Christmas! I got some I asked for, and some I didn't ask for but would like, which proves my family knows me well, and also knows how to look at an Amazon wishlist well. Here's the list:Human Chain:…See More

When Life Hands You Key Limes

I’m feeling like a braggart right now.  But, I think there might be an enlightening light at the end of my sunny, palm tree-lined tunnel, so stick with me until I get there.I’m sitting outside of a Starbucks writing this.  I am sweating in ridiculous leather boots and what I thought was a light and airy choice in…See More

Good(er) Reads: Dust Bowls, Wild Fires and Teddy Roosevelt, Oh My!

I am inspired to discuss an author and his two books today, and it’s because of something I saw on TV recently! Finally, amidst such cultural vomit as Honey Boo Boo and Ice Loves Coco, the television has produced something worthwhile!  Thanks to the wonderful Ken Burns and his narrative aplomb, “The Dust Bowl” aired on PBS…See More

Our Book Guru's Picks for Winter Reading!

I have been a bad book reviewer.  I should be forced to stand in a corner and face the wall and miss supper because of my inactivity! But, in part, my inactivity has been due to all the crazy activity. Does anybody know what the law of opposites is? No? Well, in that case I decree that this is the law of opposites. This is…See More

Good(er) Reads: Songbook by Nick Hornby

First and foremost, before I get to my hootin and hollerin about books, I hope my readers (all three of you guys!) and their loved ones made it through Sandy safe and dry.  The Hurricane definitely threw things off in my world, but it was nothing compared to what it could have been, and was, for a lot of people, so I’m thankful…See More

Good(er) Reads: Atonement by Ian McEwan

At first when I started reviewing older, more reputable books, I felt like I wasn’t allowed to be doing it.  I’m not Harold Bloom…heck, I’m not even wearing an elbow-patch coat, smoking a pipe, and sitting in some cramped little collegiate office where the walls are closing in on me from my numerous diplomas and honors nailed to…See More

Good(er) Reads

I’m very methodical in my process of picking the next book to read when I’m finished with one.  Sometimes it is a very intentionally reasoned switch from humorous nonfiction to bleak fiction, from a short, snappy play to an even shorter and even snappier poetry anthology.  Then again, sometimes I’m reading a good author and I want to…See More

My apologies for the brief book review hiatus.  But hey, sometimes life gets in the way of reading and writing, as it should! This week we’re going positively post-modern.  I’m reviewing a book that is a collection of book reviews!  Brace yourself, folks.Nick Hornby, who is perhaps one of the funniest writers to come…See More

What I Do
Blogger, Journalist, Poet, Writer(Other), Reporter
About Me
I have a degree in English literature and creative writing from Elon University, NC. My background is in poetry and creative nonfiction but I've broken into journalism to make a living. I'm looking to find ways to blend these disciplines. I enjoy writing about fashion, weddings, books, food, being a newlywed, and myself! To name a few. I do not enjoy writing about politics, but will do so for money. I am currently a freelance associate editor for a pharmaceutical ad agency in center city, but would still like to eventually end up in an industry more in line with my interests and that better utilizes my creativity.
My Past and On-Going Projects
I'm always looking for venues (magazines, blogs, publishing companies) that need freelancers, specifically around the Philadelphia area or remotely.
