Philly has a huge creative community. If it didn't, entities like Jump Magazine, Mighty Writers, the Philadelphia Film Office and many other creative organizations and outlets would not exist. We have newspapers, production companies, news stations, theaters, but I have found it difficult to reach out to everyday members of the community. I used to hop onto Craigslist all the time to search for other Philadelphians like me. This usually got me nowhere.
I'm a writer and film and video production person. People always tell me, "Go to L.A. Go to New York. You'll find the creative community there." But I ask, "Why not Philly? Why can't our city be a leader in the creative industry?" We are creative. We are talented. Our community should be greater and more unified than it is. And I believe it can be.
I believe there are people like me all across this city, who are seeking to reach out to other members of our creative community- to work together towards the wonderful goal that drives us all: creation. As a production person, I constantly need actors, directors, crew and even co-writers. Podcasters need guests and audio engineers. Bands need new members and graphic designers for their album covers. Photographers often need partners, and illustrators, well, they often need someone to illustrate for. We are a budding community, whose greatest assets can be each other. We need to have much more access to one another and our particular skill sets.
Collaborate Philly aims to achieve this. It is designed to connect the members of Philly's creative community, with its unique member page, geared toward collaboration, site features and list of resources.
Every single Collaborate Philly member has the potential to be your next co-writer, artist on that comic book you've been dreaming of, or band member. He or she may even do the jewelry for your wedding.
We do it all in this city! If we work together, we can make Philly the creative powerhouse it should be.
